It seems that every holiday has a controversial candy or food attached to it. Halloween has candy corn. Christmas has eggnog. And Easter has Peeps.

I'm a lifelong advocate of Peeps and don't see how it's possible to dislike them if you enjoy marshmallows and sugar as that's essentially all they are.

And I know I must have a lot of Peeps lovers in this world with me as the brand has released versions for Halloween, Christmas, and beyond. Someone must be buying all those Peeps!

While they're totally delicious to eat right out of the container, it's also to create homemade desserts with them. These Peeps Rice Krispies treats are easy to make and the tastiest little Easter desserts.

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

If you're a fan of Peeps and Rice Krispies treats, you will love combining them into one delicious snack.

Not only do you melt Peeps to use in the cereal mixture instead of using marshmallows, but you can also top each treat with its own Peep.

The Peeps give gorgeous colors to the cereal and include all that sweet marshmallow flavor.

This is such an easy Easter dessert to make and your kids will love helping!

🗒 Ingredients

The ingredients for these Peeps Rice Krispies treats are pretty simple and if you've ever made cereal treats before, they'll come as no surprise to you.

Here's everything you need (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):

  • Marshmallow Peeps:you can use the color or color combinations of your choice and either bunnies or chicks.
  • Rice Krispies cereal
  • Butter: you can use unsalted or salted
  • Salt: added only if using unsalted butter

🐰 How to make Peeps Rice Krispies treats

If you've made Rice Krispies treats before, these will be a breeze for you!

To start, lightly butter a 9x9 pan or line it with parchment paper.

Add butter to a large saucepan over low heat and let it melt.

Add Peeps to the pan.

If you're using different colored Peeps, keep them separated in the saucepan and let them melt.

You can gently stir them a little bit with a wooden spoon, but try to keep each color separate from each other.

Press the Rice Krispies mixture into the bottom of your prepared pan.

You can top the treats with additional Peeps if desired.

I like to cut my treats into 9 large squares, so I use 9 Peeps on top so each treat will have a cute topper.

Now, let the Peeps Rice Krispies treats cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Slice into squares and enjoy!

How cute are these little guys? Luckily, they're absolutely delicious, too! Just like a standard Rice Krispie treat, but with fun colors and a little extra sweet Peep flavor added in.

Both kids and adults will love these Easter treats and they can be served as a fun snack around the holiday or as an Easter dessert.

Of course, since Peeps come out at various holidays throughout the year now, you can make them with any kind of Peeps any time of year!

⏲️ How to store

I recommend storing the cooled cereal treats in an airtight container at room temperature.

When stored properly, they should keep fresh for about a week.

🥳 How to double recipe

If you want more treats, you can obviously cut these into smaller squares, but you may not have enough space to fit a Peep on each treat.

Of course, you can also easily double the recipe. I recommend doubling all the ingredients and making the treats in a 9x13 pan.

🎉 Variations on recipe

I love the simplicity of these Peeps Rice Krispies treats and really don't think they need anything else! But, of course, there are lots of variations you can make and things you can add to the recipe.

Here are some fun ideas:

  • Instead of swirling all the Peeps colors together, melt them in different pans and mix them with Rice Krispies separately. Then layer the different color mixtures in your pan. This will make for a fun layered color treat.
  • Mix sprinkles into your Rice Krispies mixture.
  • After cutting treats, dip half in melted chocolate or white chocolate. Or drizzle your favorite chocolate over the top.
  • Mix the flavored extract of your choice into the cereal mixture for a fun flavor twist. Or use flavored Peeps. I'm tempted to try these treats with Dr. Pepper Peeps!
  • Add chocolate chips or white chocolate chips into the mixture.
  • Stir freeze-dried fruit, like strawberries into the mixture for extra color and fruity flavor.
  • Stir pretzels into the mixture for an extra crunch and salty touch.

🐥 More Easter treats

If Peeps aren't quite your thing, don't worry, I have lots more Easter treat recipes featuring some of my other favorite Easter candy! Here are some of the best:

  • Mini Easter Pavlovas
  • Easter Cakesicles
  • Jelly Bean Ice Cream
  • Cadbury Creme Egg Ice Cream

I also make these Cadbury Mini Egg Scones every year and love these Robin's Egg Macarons, too!

FAQs

How do you make rice crispy treats not sticky? ›

Want to know the secret? Grease your spoon or spatula before combining the melted ingredients with the cereal so the mixture doesn't stick. Then, use a piece of waxed paper to press the mixture into the pan evenly with your hand so it doesn't adhere to the wooden spoon or spatula.

How do you keep Rice Krispie treats from sticking together? ›

Once you've cut up your extra rice crispy treats, stack them in an airtight container. Place a sheet of wax paper in between each layer to keep them from sticking, then seal the top. You can store the container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze the treats for up to 6 weeks.

Why won't my rice crispy treats harden? ›

Let them cool to room temperature and try again. If they're still not setting, the mixture did not contain enough cereal. Rice Krispies are soft and gooey in the pan, but quickly set up the baking dish. Follow the recipe below using the exact proportions for perfect results every time!

Why are my homemade rice crispy treats so hard? ›

If you melt the marshmallows too fast, it might result in a Rice Kripsy treat that is harder and crunchy than chewy. Take your time and let the butter and marshmallows melt slowly. Use an 8×8 or slightly smaller pan. Use a small and deep pan if you want thick and chewy rice Krispy treats.

What happens if you put too much butter in Rice Krispie Treats? ›

What happens if you put too much butter in Rice Krispies Treats? If you put too much butter in rice krispies treats they will become oily, the cereal will soak up the butter and the treats will become soggy, rather than crispy.

How do you fix dry rice crispy treats? ›

Another addition that can bring Rice Krispie treats to a whole other level, and make them softer and more moist, is sweetened condensed milk. In fact, it can keep these sweets from being too dry and chewy from the moment that you bite into them.

Do you have to refrigerate Rice Krispie Treats after you make them? ›

Do Rice Crispy Treats Need to be Refrigerated? No. I recommend keeping these Rice Crispy Treats in an airtight container at room temperature. Refrigerating will make the marshmallow in them super hard, so I advise to leave them at room temperature.

Why are Rice Krispies sticky? ›

My treats are overly gooey/sticky. The only answer for this is that you used too many marshmallows. (I know, is that even possible?) I like to keep around a 1:1 ratio of marshmallows to dry cereal, so try to stick close to that unless you like your treats super gooey.

What makes my rice sticky? ›

Amylopectin is a highly branched starch molecule that is responsible for making rice gelatinous and sticky. Rice with a high amount of amylopectin will be very sticky once cooked.
