What mental illness did Nina have in Black Swan? ›

Black Swan depicts a young woman's tragic journey through her first episode of psychosis. Nina is a talented ballerina whose stress intensifies as she works to perfect the role of the Swan Queen in her professional ballet company's production of Swan Lake.

Maybe she had the first one at the bar with Lilly and the two guys, because Lilly confirmed they existed the next day. NOT REAL: Therefore, Lilly and Nina did not have actual sex (we know this because after sex, Lilly said something to Nina about being a ‘Good girl’ and then tried to smother her.

In Darren Aronofsky's 2010 film, Black Swan, the main character is a white female around the age of 21. Nina Sayers is of average height but is visibly underweight. She has rigid posture with slender limbs. Nina's face is lean and long with hazel eyes that are slightly deep set and a crown of deep brown hair.

In the final ballet performance in Black Swan's ending, Nina is flawless and seems to have achieved the perfection that she has been striving for so long. However, given that her abdomen wound was still open and bleeding, she most likely succumbed to the bleeding as she fell through the air and landed on the mattress.

The night before she is set to perform, Nina becomes convinced that Lily is going to take her place. Her paranoia and mental strain cause her to hallucinate that she's physically turning into the role of Odile, the Black Swan, complete with red eyes and black feathers protruding from bird-like skin.

Nina and Lily drink and take ecstasy in one scene. It shows the effects of the drug but in a very dark and unappealing light.

As the fight escalates further, Nina grabs a piece of the mirror and stabs Lily in the stomach. Unsure of what to do, Nina hides the bleeding body in her bathroom and then puts on the Black Swan's make-up. She takes the stage and begins to dance with passionate abandon.

She is anxious, moody, and temperamental. Nina is fixated on the romantic tragedy of Swan Lake and she ultimately kills herself in tribute to it. However, while Nina is clearly and explicitly suffering from mental illness, many of her symptoms are considered standard for an elite ballerina at the height of her career.

The ending is actually pretty clear on what happened. Nina stabbed herself and imagined the whole thing with stabbing/fighting Lily and turning into a swan. She also imagined the sex scene and the fact that Lily was after her. Nina died at the end of the ballet, that much was very obvious.

According to Malaspina, Nina's affliction is most consistent with a severely neurotic, obsessive-compulsive patient with features of a borderline personality disorder who suffers from “mini-psychotic episodes.”

One of those darker aspects is the bipolar disorder that Kat and her mother each struggle with, going on and off medication while falling into deep spirals of mania that affect them on and off the ice.
